Space
Understanding the dimensions of your dining room will help create a comfortable area for everyone invited to sit at your table. Measure each wall in your dining room, as well as the distance between any doors or windows. Keep in mind you’ll want to add about three feet of clearance to either side of the table to allow for chairs to be pulled out and to accommodate foot traffic. Also allow for two feet between each seat to avoid crowding.
Table Length
The easiest way to find the right dining table is to consider the number of guests you want to seat at your table. For square and rectangular tables, here are the ideal table lengths per party size:
4 People = 48” table length
6 People = 62–72” table length
8 People = 80–87” table length
10 People = 92–108” table length
12 People = 120” table length
Round tables are a great way to keep conversations flowing, and to maximize space in a smaller dining room. Here are the ideal table lengths per party size:
4–6 People = 42–48” table diameter
6–8 People = 60” table diameter
Standard Height
28–30” tall. Common for in-home formal dining spaces. Accommodates adults and children comfortably and allows for bench seating.
Counter Height
34–36” tall. Slightly elevated seating height that pairs with stools and chairs. Can double as a space for food prep and informal gathering.
Bar Height
40–42” tall. A more laid back and casual feel for a dining space. Works well for compact spaces and can be styled with chairs or, more commonly, stools.
