The optimum height of a dining chair is based on your table. A taller table will require taller chairs to feel comfortable. A standard dining table is about 28 to 30 inches tall. You'll want about a foot between your seat and the bottom of the table so your knees aren't bumping up against the underside and your food is in a comfortable position. This means an 18-inch-high dining chair, measured from the floor to the top of the seat, is optimum. The height doesn't include the back or armrests.
If you have a non-standard dining table, or use a bar, counter, or kitchen island instead, you may need slightly taller chairs. Bar and counter stools are made to be comfortable for these taller table alternatives. Generally, you'll want to measure the height of your dining surface and look for a chair or stool about a foot shorter.
There are a few options when it comes to dining room chairs. Variations may include:
Just like the height of the chair, the number of chairs you need is dependent on the type and size of table you have. If you try to cram too many chairs around a smaller table, you and your family or guests might feel crowded and bump elbows while trying to eat. If you don't have enough chairs, there may not be room for everyone or the table may feel empty.
Generally, you want to give about 24 to 30 inches of space for each seat. Square tables are usually 36 to 44 inches wide, and can typically fit one chair per side. Rectangular tables may be longer, fitting two or three chairs on each long side plus one chair at each end.
Round tables are a bit more variable, so you'll need to know the circumference of your particular table. Divide the circumference by 30 inches per chair. Keep in mind that if you choose a wider chair, you may need more space per seat, and don't forget to add extra chairs if you have a removable leaf.
