Although technically any chair can be brought outdoors, most furniture will not last very long outside. Chairs that are designed to be used outdoors are typically made of much more durable materials than indoor furniture. They often use strong metals such as aluminum or cast iron, durable woods like teak or wicker, heavy plastics, and sturdy fabrics such as canvas. This means you can leave them outside for long periods of time without them getting damaged.
Indoor furniture may crack or warp due to the high moisture levels and frequent temperature changes outside. Fabrics or padding can also mold or mildew from the moisture. Or they can be torn more easily by branches or animals.
There are many types of chairs for outdoor use. Some are designed for comfortable conversation around a fire pit or patio. Outdoor lounge chairs, rocking chairs, and Adirondack chairs are all great for relaxing, whether you’re enjoying the sun with a good book or some company.
If you enjoy having coffee with the sunrise or grilling on the patio, outdoor dining chairs are also a great option. These often come as a patio furniture set with a table. But they can also be bought individually. Outdoor dining chairs can be similar to indoor ones, or you can get benches for a picnic-style aesthetic.
Barstools can also be made for the outdoors to go along with your backyard bar.
Finally, if you want outdoor chairs that are easy to move, outdoor folding chairs can be set up and put away at a moment’s notice. This is great for adding seating during a party without cluttering up your patio all the time. Folding chairs can also be ideal for small spaces where traditional outdoor furniture might take up too more space than you’d like.
During the warm months or when the weather is nice, outdoor furniture can generally be left outside all the time. However, there are some times you should move your furniture indoors or to a safe, covered location.
Although outdoor tables and chairs are designed to withstand moisture and temperature changes, extreme weather can still do damage. Many materials are sturdy when it’s warm but may crack or warp when it starts to freeze. High winds or storms may also blow lightweight chairs around, causing damage as they impact against the ground or other objects.
When it comes to rain or snow, some items can be protected by outdoor furniture covers. Some furniture — particularly concrete, natural stone, and wood pieces — can be cleaned and sealed in order to protect it from moisture in the fall and winter.
Generally, if you’re able to store your outdoor patio furniture indoors or in a sheltered area like a shed, it’s a good idea to do so whenever there might be inclement weather. Patio furniture can be a large investment, but it can last a long time if properly cared for.
