How Can I Decorate My Windows for Christmas?

Decorating your windows is a great way to tie together your holiday decor and add a little festivity from the outside of your home. There are many ways to decorate windows ranging from classic to modern. Choose from these ideas, combine them, or take inspiration to come up with your own to create a window style that is uniquely yours.

Christmas Window Decorating Ideas

There are many traditions, old and new, surrounding Christmas decorating, and windows are no exception.

Vintage candle and wreath

For some simple but classic window decor, consider hanging a wreath with an electric or flameless candle nestled inside. Wreaths come in a variety of colors and styles to match your decor style. There are the classic evergreen wreaths, of course, but you can also get floral wreaths, lighted wreaths, and even ones made entirely out of ornaments or bows.

A single candle placed in the bottom of the wreath can make a beautiful statement. Some people also like to place candles in threes, or even line a whole wreath with small electric candles.

Nostalgic Christmas light figurine

Lighted figurines are a staple of classic Christmas window decorations. Cute holiday-themed ornaments bring instant cheer to your home. The figures are illuminated by small Christmas lights that may be plugged into an outlet or battery powered, depending on the location of your window.

Garland frame

Framing your windows in a strand or two of garland is a great way to decorate without blocking your view. You can also enhance existing decor with a garland frame.

There are a variety of garlands to choose from. Most people think of festive green garlands of leaves or evergreen, but garlands can also be made of beads or ornaments. Or you can have fun tackling the classic popcorn garland if you’re up for some crafting

Simple mobile

Mobiles make great window Christmas decor. You can buy a premade mobile, or you can make a mobile of your own using some dowels and string. Make the objects using whatever you want, such as some ornaments, baked or air-dried clay, or even paper.

Tinsel and ribbon

For quick and easy Christmas window decoration ideas, consider hanging some tinsel or ribbons from your windows. Tinsel adds some festive sparkle without too much work. Simply hang the strands from the windowsills, some wire, a garland, or a piece of ribbon strung across.

Ribbons can also be hung in creative ways. Dangle some twists from the top of the sill, or tie a few bows and attach them to the panes.

Windowsill village

If you have a collection of classic Christmas village figurines, or you’d like to start one, consider using them for your window decor. Pair a few snow-covered houses with your choice of shops — think post office, bookstore, library, or a mini shopping mall for some festive options. Populate your town with figurines such as ice skaters, sledders, patrons loaded with presents, and jolly Saint Nick, himself.

Window clings

Christmas window clings are a simple option for a variety of scenarios. Consider adding some clings to small windows, or windows with little to no sill. You can also put up window clings in a child’s bedroom. If you rent your home or apartment, clings are also an option that requires no nails or extra adhesive.

Christmas Decor Tips

Decorating doesn’t only include the items, themselves. Attaching them safely and securely is an important part of making sure your beautiful decor lasts all season long.

Sticking ornaments to the window

There are a few different ways to hang some ornaments in your window decor. To attach them to the actual window, you can use adhesive hooks or suction cups the ornaments can dangle from. You can also use a small dot of hot glue to stick one side of the ornament to the glass. Just be sure to test and make sure the glue won’t leave a mark when peeled off.

If you don’t want to attach things to the actual glass, you can hang some strands of lights, beads, garland, or string from the top of the sill. Then attach the ornaments to the strands.

Securing windowsill decor

When it comes to securing decor on your windowsill, you want to be sure the pieces won’t be jostled or knocked down. But you also may not want to do any permanent damage to your sill. Adhesive hooks with removable backings are a great way to create temporary attachments. You can also use a folded piece of clear tape.

Another way to secure your decor is to attach all the pieces to a length of wire. Then, bend the wire and attach it to an adhesive hook or suction cup.

Properly framing lights and garlands around windows

To hang lights or garlands around your windows, you can use small plastic clips designed for lights that adhere to your window or sill. You can also get small hooks to hang them from. Many people like to leave the top of the light or garland hanging down across the top of the window for a loose, natural style.

Hiding wires

If you’re looking to hide the wires connected to your decor, don’t be afraid to get creative. You can integrate your wires into the design using pieces of garland, beading, or Christmas lights. Simply wrap them around the wires, or vice versa, to make them less noticeable. You can also use the wires to hang other decor, such as ornaments. Though this won’t necessarily hide them, it will make them seem both functional and festive, rather than an eyesore.

Wires that have to cross the wall outside of your windows can also be disguised. Hang some wall art or decor in front of them, or use similar tactics with garlands or Christmas lights to make them less obvious.

Create Beautiful Lighted Christmas Window Decorations This Holiday

Whether your style is classic or modern, Christmas window decor is a timeless tradition. Get creative with window decor ideas, combining classic elements such as garlands or lights with modern pieces such as window clings to create the perfect Christmas decorations for your family.
