Affordable dressers come in a variety of styles. When most people think of a dresser, they think of the traditional horizontal style, which usually sits about waist height, with 2-4 rows of drawers.
The chest of drawers style dresser is also popular. This style is taller and narrower, with several drawers in a single column.
Some dressers come with a matching mirror that sits on top, a style sometimes referred to as a bureau. Finally, a wardrobe is a type of dresser that is like a standalone closet, with a large cabinet for hanging items, as well as drawers.
You can put a chest of drawers anywhere you would like some extra storage. In a living room, dressers can be used to store many things, including extra pillows and blankets, entertainment such as DVDs and board games, or out-of-season decor.
A dresser or chest of drawers can also be used as a coffee table or sideboard. Some people use the surface to display pictures or other decor, as well.
Dressers can also be used throughout the house. In the kitchen, it can store dishes or table linens. A bathroom chest can hold towels, spare toiletries, or extra clothes. You can even put a dresser in a home office to store office supplies, files, or project tools.
The height of your dresser drawers depends on what you’d like to store. Dressers under $300 range from small drawers around 4 inches in height to large drawers about twice that height.
Larger drawers are better for bulky items such as linens, heavy clothing like jeans or sweatshirts, and solid or non-fabric items that may not be flexible enough to squeeze into a shorter drawer. Small drawers, however, are ideal for thin fabrics such as undergarments, and small items like silverware or office supplies.
