Time to grab the measuring tape. To properly measure chairs or sofas for a seat cushion, you’ll need to determine the width and the depth of the area the cushion will sit on.

Consider Your Space

Choosing materials for your outdoor cushions will be primarily dependent on where the furniture is located. Will they be in direct sunlight, or do you have a covered porch or patio? Outdoor cushions are available in a wide range of waterproof and fade-resistant materials to keep your aesthetic looking fresh for seasons to come. Consider the following popular options.

Polyester

Widely available and affordable, but less durable. Best-suited for a single season’s use. Prone to fading from sustained sun exposure as well as stains.

Vinyl

Made from PVC or plastic and highly water-resistant. Easy to clean, but can become very hot in direct sunlight.

Texteline

A synthetic, highly-durable woven fabric that holds up to wear and tear. Prone to fading if placed in direct sunlight.

Olefin

A soft yet synthetic fabric that replicates indoor comfort while withstanding elements like wind, rain, and direct sunlight. Eco-friendly.

Sunbrella

A synthetic, solution-dyed fabric that is both mildew and fade resistant. A premium option given its durability, though not as soft as Olefin.

Care & Cleaning

Although outdoor cushions are designed to withstand wear-and-tear from wind and rain, they do require some upkeep to maintain good condition. While most materials can be treated with mild soap and water, consult the manufacturers guidelines before cleaning. Consider cushions or pillows with removable covers for easier cleaning in the washing machine.
