French white porcelain "Le Beurre" butter bell. This style of butter dish is said to have originated in France during the late-19th century. Known as a French butter dish, or "beurrier Breton" It keeps your butter soft and spreadable without refrigeration. The water barrier keeps the butter from spoiling at room temperature. Fill the chamber with water and store the "Bell" in the water.
