How To Hang a Chandelier or Pendant

Over a Table

You want your pendant or chandelier light to sit in the middle of your table without covering more than one-half to three-quarters of the table width. You also don’t want your lighting fixture to hang any lower than 30 to 36 inches above the table.

Over a Kitchen Island or Bar

Similar to over a table, leave 30 to 36 inches between the bottom of the fixture and the table surface. If you are hanging multiple pendants, leave 30 inches between them for ample space.

In the Middle of a Room

Choose a chandelier that matches the scale of the room. A general rule of thumb for chandeliers is that the higher the ceiling height, the bigger the chandelier.

In an Entryway

When hanging in your entryway, follow the same rule as a living room. Add the width and length of the space in feet and choose a similar diameter lighting fixture in inches. Generally, you will not want your fixture to hang any lower than 7 feet from the ground to allow plenty of space.

Pro Tip

An easy tip for matching the chandelier to the ceiling height is to add up the length and width of the room in feet, then use that total in inches as the diameter of the chandelier.

For example, if your room is 14 feet wide and 16 feet long, 30 inches would be the best diameter for your lighting fixture.

Consider Your Placement

Is there enough space in the room you would like your chandelier or pendant to hang? Are there any surfaces or other features of the room that would interfere with the fixture? The ceiling height should be measured to see where the lighting fixture will fall.
