Shelves: the stylistic storage component that every home needs. Unlike a standard bookcase, you can adapt various types of shelving to any type of space, while retaining the ability to move their configuration later. Save room, showcase your keepsakes, or simply add a creative accent to your walls. Read on to learn more about shelving.

Shelving Types

What is your home’s overall aesthetic? Are you looking to match it, or to create contrast? And, are you looking for ultra-functional shelves, or are you more interested in creating a style statement? The answers to the above will help guide you to the best shelving for your interior.

Floating Shelves

Pros: Minimalist design, easy installation, won’t take up much space if you have a smaller area to work with.

F.A.Q.

How many inches should my shelves be off the ground?

Wall-mounted shelving units' heights can vary, but they look best when installed at eye level. This draws the attention up from the furniture-covered ground and makes use of your vertical space. If shelves are placed over a counter, ensure there is at least 16” of space between the counter and the shelves. If you are staggering multiple shelves, you need about 16” of space between them.

How close to the ceiling can items be stored?

There is an 18” rule that prevents any storage or shelving units from interfering with the spray of a water sprinkler during a fire. Therefore, when adding shelving and storage units, be sure to leave 18” of space below the ceiling free. This also leaves ample room for the decorative items on your shelves.

Does shelving need to be secured to the wall?

Shelves should always be secured to the wall to avoid any damage or accidents. Freestanding units come with a safety strap that should be secured to the wall, and any wall-mounted shelving units need to be installed correctly. Avoid climbing or putting undue weight on the shelving units to avoid any risks of toppling over and causing injury or damage.
